The award is given to those farms annually who present a positive image of the State's agriculture.
The announcement at the February 4th Awards breakfast at the NH Farm & Forest Expo was very exciting. There were many prestigious recipients and we were very honored to be among them. Governor Lynch and Executive Council member Ray Burton presented us with a Farm Of Distinction sign to place on our sugarhouse.
Sugarhouse Hours 2008
Upcoming Calendar of Activities
We will be helping staff the NH Maple Producers booth on Friday night as we've done for at least the last 15 years. If get a chance to come, be sure to stop at the maple booth, say hi and get a sample of the famous "Maple Milk". You won't be disappointed.
We are already getting prepared to start the season. The wood is stacked and ready. A trip last week to the supply house for new spiles & bucket lids will allow us to add some new taps this year. Brian set some test taps a few weeks back and the sugar content of the sap seems to be on the rise. Looks like he may be able to start tapping the beginning of next week.
Snow anyone? All the talk I hear from folks is enough is enough! Maybe for some but it insulates the ground from warming too soon so we aren't complaining too much. Brian has been on bucket brigade the last 2 weeks. Scrubbing hundreds of buckets in preparation of tapping. Looks like tapping will happen this week. Brian is planning on Tuesday and Wednesday to get started.
We had a tease of a run on Wednesday this week after the rain. It gave us enough sap to sweeten the pans in the evaporator but that's about it. This weekend will warm the trees again so hopefully on Monday we can get another run before Tuesday's storm. Cross your fingers for next weekend - we are!
Despite the snow we have had a couple of days of sap and boiling so we have made some very nicely favored first run syrup. Half graded out as Light Amber and the rest is graded as Medium Amber but all with that first run flavor.
Mother Nature is always testing us and this week is no exception. Snow and rain but the sap still ran the last two days and may again tomorrow. We've collected about 1600 gallons in the past 2 days. Keep it coming!
Oh my gosh! We have had run after run of sap last week and this week. Brian has been boiling and collecting almost non-stop. Yesterday we packaged our first Grade A Dark Amber syrup of the season. Very nice tasting. If the weather holds we could have a banner year. We'll know when it's over.
Who'd have guessed this weather?! We just keep saying WOW! Still collecting sap and plenty to boil. The sugar content is noticably dropping though so it's the first sign of the beginning of the end. But probably not for week or so. Let's hope.
The season continues to give us abundant volumes of sap but the sugar content is nearing the cellar. Brian collected today at a location whose trees produce well and the sugar content of the sap was under 1%. Based on Jones Rule of 86 that means we'll have to boil @ 86 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. Not ideal but so far it still tastes ok. It will be day by day now to see when the season ends.
NH may still be reaching for that #1 spot on the all time most snowfall but this sugarhouse has made a record crop that will be hard to repeat in our foreseeable future. Brian will begin pulling buckets today. The season is over for us.
We want to heartily thank everyone who came this season. We truly enjoy the opportunity to share our love of sugaring. It's such a treat when we have kids come in who say they want to make maple syrup when they grow up! And as always we made some great new acquaintances.
Maple Weekend
We have "tours" ongoing all day both days for visitors who come to our sugarhouse. Brian goes through the details of tapping, collection, storage, boiling, testing, grading and packing continuously as folks arrive. If you come in part way through just wait until the end and he'll start over so you can pick up the beginning. Questions are always welcome.
Outside the sugarhouse we have maple trees tapped with buckets hanging and you are welcome to pop the lid and look inside to see the sap.
In the store we have samples of maple syrup, maple cream and maple candy to try. And we will also have the truly yummy Maple Sundaes on sale.
While they last, we also offer some free recipe cards and for the younger children we have activity papers to take home.
****Special Notes****
It is still somewhat snowy and the parking lot and driveway are dirt so boots or other appropriate foot wear would be in order.
Parking can overflow to the street and we ask that you only park on the Sugar House side of Candia Road for safety. There are still snow banks and other traffic will need to get through.
We do not have a public restroom so plan accordingly.
We now have:
Grade A Med & Dark Syrup
**Grade B Syrup - limited sizes/qty**
Maple Cream
Maple Candy
Maple Sugar
Maple Taffy (Tire) Sold out 'til next year
